I met Mark...

I am about to tell you about the time I met Mark Hamill not once but twice. The first time I was able to meet him was back in the summer of 1995 at the Big Bang Con that was held in Chicago. I, being from New Jersey, figured I wouldn't get another chance like this again ... after all, an appearance by Mr. Hamill was somewhat rare, so off I went to the Windy City. The Big Bang Con had celebrities from other Sci Fi shows such as some of the actors from ‘B5’ as well as Billy Mumy from 'Lost In Space' and Walter Koenig from 'Star Trek'... But I was there to see Mark.

From a distance, actors look bigger than life, and Mark looked very much so arriving in a limo and waving to the crowd that heard he just arrived. However, I was soon to find out what regular guy he was. Mr. Hamill arrived to applause from the thousands that showed up. I could almost bet most, if not all, were there to see him. He did a very nice question and answer session ... where he was asked by one attendee to do the voice of the Joker... he did it without hesitation. He talked about his role as Luke Skywalker and how he remained close to some of the actors from the Star Wars universe. He talked about other projects he was working on, such as a comic book , and then it was time for the autograph session.

Many of the other celebrities that were there budgeted their time accordingly to just have about an two hour session to sign, then they wrapped up and went out the side exits leaving some fans without any autographs at all. Mark, on the other hand, stayed until each and every attendee had at least one autograph from him. I have mine displayed on my wall, an 8x10 shot him from ‘Jedi’ and it is signed ‘Best to Jim / Mark Hamill’. I thought that this would be one of my only opportunities to meet him in person so I was happy with the autograph.... But I was wrong... Mark mentioned at that the Big Bang that he was not only an actor/voice over artist but he was delving into the word of comics. He is a big fan of them and set out to write his own comic called ‘The Black Pearl’. I didn’t think much of what he was saying regarding the comic because at the time it was being shopped around. I left the con happy knowing I met an actor I admired and an autograph to hang on my wall...
